Excursion
to the Museum
August 2005
What a huge day! When
we arrived at the museum we went straight
into our first educational program about
Dinosaurs and Fossils. Here we were able
to touch and examine different fossils,
learn about the existence and extinction
of dinosaurs and even the 6 characteristics
to walk like a Tyrannosaurus Rex! We then
went to our Bugs educational program. Here
we learned about the features that classify
a creature as a bug, as well as inspecting
a few bugs and insects (dead and alive)
up close and personal. We then were free
to explore both the Dinosaur Exhibition
and the Bugs Exhibition
.
Dinosaurs & Fossils:
Madisan: "We saw some fossils
that were Sea Stars."
Ruby: "I learned that wood can
become a fossil when it gets covered in
stone."
Jaiden & Tristan: "We learnt
that insects can be fossilized in amber
and dinosaur poo can be fossilized too!"
Xavier:" I learned that fossils
are very heavy."
Ruby: "I learned that a meteorite
hit the earth in Mexico and dinosaurs became
extinct."
Lauren: "I learnt that only
the teeth of a Shark can become fossilized
because they are made of cartilage."
Bugs:
Daniel: "I learned that bugs
can have 6 - 8 legs. Spiders and Scorpions
have 8 legs."
Molly: "I learned that beetles
have 2 sets of wings."
Alex: "I learned that bugs have
segmented legs."
Tristan: "I learned that bugs
have an exoskeleton."
Molly: "I learned that spiders
use their feelers to feel."
Piero: "I learned that some
bugs smell with their antennae."
Mackenzie: "I learned that Dung
Beetles eat animal poo and if they didn't
we would be up to our ears in flies!"
Madisan: "I learned that spiders
have spinnerets on their back to make a
web to catch their food."
Lauren: "I learned that the
Leaf Insect lays its eggs on the tree but
they fall off. Then the ants collect them
because they have sugary stuff on them.
Also only male Leaf Insects have wings"
A huge thank you to Sue, Sabrina
and Maria Kelly once again for their efforts
to transport us, support us and share the
experience with us. It was greatly appreciated.
