Dinosaur
Incursion
August 2005
As part of the Great
Stories, the Cycle 2 children are learning
about the evolution of animals within the
context of the formation of the universe.
The children are plotting a timeline of
events and during the learning about the
existence of dinosaurs, some wonderful learning
opportunities arose.
In one session, Emily (Cycle 2 teacher)
gave each child three laminated pictures
of different dinosaurs, with their corresponding
dates of existence labelled on them. As
a group the children had to sort their pictures
into a sequenced timeline along the floor.
The following skills quickly then came into
play: reading, solving, comparing, choosing,
sorting, recognizing, identifying, representing,
commenting, demonstrating, explaining, positioning,
organising, guessing, locating, discussing,
predicting, restating, constructing, creating,
judging, selecting, verifying, debating,
arguing and recommending! All in one 15
minute spontaneous activity! All children,
all engaged, all working together!
