Our new school is turning our vision into reality! More than a statement of our philosophy, our vision underpins the very nature of what we do. Our entire school community is dedicated to this vision of environmental sustainability within the principles of Montessori Education. Award winning school! Gisborne Montessori School has achieved excellent results in the past three years.

The school actively promotes respect for self, each other, the community and the environment. As children learn best through modelling, 'respect for the environment’ was best demonstrated through the design and construction of an environmentally sustainable school as well as the extensive campus development to create an active learning landscape modelled along permaculture lines.

Energy Efficient School Buildings
Parents and staff designed and 'owner-built' a 5 star energy efficient school building. Many of the older children were involved in design discussions and all children visited the building site during various stages of construction. They now see and feel the benefits of passive solar design. Our second building is now under construction and benefits from the knowledge gained during construction of building 1 and one year's utilisation of that space. The energy rating of Building 2 is projected at 8.5 stars (well beyond the 6 star upper limit of the FirstRate energy rating system).

Integrated Curriculum
One of the five great lessons that Montessori Curriculum is based upon is the coming of plants and animals within the context of the evolution of the universe and our earth. At our new campus we have been able to extend this learning into real life, practical application through the exploration and development of biodiversity – both within the school grounds and out into the wider community. The children have taken on an active role and are developing their relationship with the environment. Read more
