The Owner Builder article - Starting
Out
Gisborne is
a picturesque country town graced with
tree lined streets. Near the entrance
to the town and nestled under a giant
oak tree is the Gisborne Montessori School
(GMS). It is one of five Montessori Primary
schools in Victoria and the only one north
west of Melbourne (40 minutes drive).
Starting in 2000 with 16 students, the
school was fortunate to obtain 'temporary'
accommodation in Macedon House - one of
the oldest buildings in Gisborne...

The
Owner Builder article - Materials
Selection
An article on material
selection
oh, yawn - BIG yawn!! What
on earth could anyone find interesting to
write about material selection??? For those
about to build or currently building, it can
be a most fascinating topic, for others it
can be as captivating as watching paint dry.
For owner builders, material selection can
involve hours of research, seeking expertise
and fine distinctions in areas that one even
knew existed (nor cared)! The arrival of every
edition of The Owner Builder now brings our
household to a complete standstill!! Countless
hours of investigation, the ins and outs of
products, the why's, the who's, the relentless
search for 'the best deal.' Then there is
the triumphant presentation of research findings.
About that time (but never beforehand) someone
makes a simple observation. We call this a
Blinding Flash of the Obvious. This results
in a tangential line of research starting
up and the whole thing starts again. Associations
are sought, requirements are further refined,
suppliers are harassed and re-quotes are sought!
The Owner Builder article - Not
Crazy - just building ourselves a school
'You are going to
build a what??? A school???' The rolling eyes
and doubtful looks became a regular
response from people we spoke to about this
project. It was then followed by an incredulous
... Well...
(struggling for something positive to say)
that's... a ... um... big project!' And indeed,
it is a big project.
